My Peace: Landscape Photo Assignment

I hope you guys are not too tired of checking out my photo assignments for class. I really feel like posting them gives me a second chance to present them.....really because when I present them in class I forget about some of the things I want to bring up about the photos.

This week we were assigned landscape. We were to tell our fellow students about a place. Sort of become a photojournalist and present a place that is interesting......I chose the ranch...

I want to begin by showing the view from my house. This really is the overview of the property. I like to think that this is the very tip top of the beginning of the Texas Hill Country. Being able to have a place to 'come home' too is a great feeling for me. The first part of my life was spent moving to different places so planting roots is really exciting to me....and planting them in such a beautiful place is just the cherry on top. (side note, for the critique I was called out on the washout on the cliffs, which I really expected to be called out on)

Here is a shot of the goats in the coastal field. The goats, I feel, really give life to the ranch. We look forward to meeting the new kids in the spring and really enjoy watching them discover their world. Each of our goats have a name, although, I do not remember them all. I really like to think that our goats are very well taken care of.  I remember my first interactions with the goats the first years with Jake. The first kidding was really amazing. How can something be so cute? With the creation of life came some harsh realities of nature. I remember the first set of triplets I met, their mother pushed one away. She new she didn't have enough milk to feed them all. I remember riding in the gator back to the house talking to Padre attempting to understand. But nature is nature. I am just happy that we care enough to tend to the ones that get pushed away.

This is one of the many gates on the property. (this one leading from the coastal to the creek) They are sometimes frustrating to open but sort of interesting. Padre made most of the gates (if not all) on the property. In some situations I bet they can be a piece of art. You can't just say "I am going to put this metal together and it will be a gate' You have to ensure your dimensions are proper. What are you keeping out or in? Will this do the job? A gate is never 'just a gate.'

This seems to be an unusual shot of the creek, because lately it has been bone dry. We recently had a rain (much needed). The creek runs throughout the ranch. This is really one of my favorite places. Once we found a soft shell turtle....I think the first I have ever seen. We take the pups out and let them run about. Once, when there was more water, Padre, Madre Jake and I went to an area with a short water fall into a hole we took turns sliding down on tubes. (it would have been behind me in this photo) This was fun for a few reasons.......one being Padre was in swimwear...which is out of his usual 'ranch attire.' Again the Sandburg's 'Happiness' (http://brandiensmith.com/peace-of-b/2013/5/13/and-so-it-begins) comes to mind.

Along the cliff are tons of loose rock laying about. These rocks have fallen off the side of the cliff. I have never witnessed it but have heard it from the house. This one looks as if it was shaved off and placed in the center of the creek.....think about it....it is just falling apart.

Several trees line the edge of the cliff....holding on to dear life and peaking over the edge like a child curious about what their mother is making on the kitchen counter.

A line of trees, the first hunched over down for the count. He just couldn't hold on any longer....makes me wonder what the other trees will look like in a few years. Nature in it's purest form.

On the other side of the creek sits this amazing tree. The sun was setting and this tree seemed to be soaking it all in. The bottom of the tree lays branches that just couldn't hang any longer. A constant reminder of the remaining tree to take in everything it can.

Back in the coastal field looking towards the oat field. This seems very Jurassic to me. I feel that any moment a stegosaurus is going to coast on by with his tail swinging behind him, in search of his next veggie feast.

The oats! Padre planted this field right before it rained!!!! We now get to witness millions of little sprouts begin their lives.

Sprouts taking root...soaking in their surroundings in their attempt to survive.

Padre planting the oats....notice the dust! At the center of this photo is a close up shot of the planter. This is where the seeds come out and find their place in the ground.

And their she is......I am so grateful to be taking root on the ranch. My love for this place and its inhabitants is immense. I feel that my peace is near by.
